Free download Pilate left Jesus in the hands of soldiers to be tortured and beaten. The men who committed the heinous act added insult to His injuries by dressing Jesus as a faux king. But what the soldiers didn’t realize was that their actions symbolized the truth of Jesus Kingship, and added strength to the claim of Jesus’ power to save us all.

The crown of thorns reminds us that…

1. Jesus is King over our sin: It was our sin and rebellion that brought thorns into this world. (Genesis 3:17-19). Jesus’ crown of thorns is a reminder that He carried our sins to the cross to save us from that rebellion (2 Cor. 5:21).

2. Jesus is King over our worldliness: The thorns of temptation and distraction are everywhere in this world, strangling our relationship with God (Mark 4:1-8). Jesus’ crown of thorns reminds us that if we give him our temptations and distractions, he will help us to overcome (Psalm 55:22).

3. Jesus is King over our weakness: Paul was given a “thorn in his flesh” to remind him that he was weak, but through Christ he was strong (2 Corinthians 12: 7-10). Jesus’ crown of thorns reminds us that only he has the strength to pull us through this world. It is only by His grace that we succeed (2 Corinthians 13:4).
